Lt
Colonel (Select) Bruce W. Hess, D.O.
Pediatrician
Flight Surgeon, USAF Reserve
Dr. Bruce Hess was born in Winchester, Virginia, but was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana and so claims to hail from "The Big Easy." Upon graduating with an undergraduate degree in biology from Oklahoma Christian University of the Science and Arts, he received the competitive Health Professions Scholarship Program from the U.S. Air Force. He completed medical school under this scholarship at Oklahoma State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine (Tulsa, Oklahoma) in May 1998.
After medical school, he was accepted into a pediatric internship and residency at Keesler Medical Center, Keesler AFB (Biloxi, Mississippi), where he first crossed paths with Dr. Peterson -- they actually lived right next door to each other in houses that have since been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Both new docs graduated from residency in June 2001, but Dr. Hess remained an extra year as chief resident in pediatrics at Keesler.
A subsequent tour at Landstuhl Army Medical Center (Landstuhl Army Post, Germany) was followed by his most recent position as Chief of Pediatrics at then Elmendorf AFB (Anchorage, Alaska).
Ptarmigan Pediatrics, LLC, has long been a collaborative effort between Drs. Hess and Peterson, so it was with great excitement that they were stationed together once again in Alaska. Dr. Hess separated from active duty during the summer of 2009 and joined this civilian practice with Dr. Peterson already in progress a few weeks later.
Dr. Hess has been a board certified pediatrician since 2001, and is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
He is a fanatical sports fan, with his favorite teams being the New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma Sooners, and the Chicago Bulls. Of course he likes fishing and hiking, and has visited over 20 countries. He has a son in elementary school and has been married for 17 years. He is a decent horse-back rider, thanks to having a wife who gives riding lessons and owns Frost Bit Farm Sporthorses, LLC!
