Dr. PetersonLt. Colonel Laura J. Peterson, M.D.
Pediatrician
Flight Surgeon, USAF Reserve

After 10 years as a pediatrician in the United States Air Force, Dr. Laura Peterson found the place she wants to call home -- ALASKA!  During the summer of 2008 she separated from active duty at then Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage where she was chief of inpatient pediatrics at Elmendorf AFB Medical Center. Shortly thereafter she and good friend Dr. Bruce Hess formed Ptarmigan Pediatrics, LLC, in now world-famous Wasilla, Alaska.

Yet she has not left her military roots behind. Dr. Peterson has transitioned to her new role as a certified flight surgeon in the US Air Force active reserve, doing her "one weekend a month, two weeks a year" service for her country with the 477th Aerospace Medicine Flight in support of the new and exciting F-22A "Raptor" unit -- the 477th Fighter Group stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Dr. Peterson was born in Roseburg and raised in nearby Sutherlin, Oregon. She graduated with a B.S. degree in biology from Walla Walla University (College Place, Washington) and received her M.D. degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine (Loma Linda, California) under the competitive Health Professions Scholarship Program from the US Air Force. She completed her residency training in pediatrics with Dr. Hess at Keesler Medical Center / Keesler Air Force Base (Biloxi, Mississippi) and has also served as pediatric element chief at Mountain Home AFB Medical Center (Mountain Home, Idaho).Dr. Peterson enjoying some solitude fishing Jim Creek She is currently the pediatric medical director at Mat Su Regional Medical Center and the medical director for Mollen Immunization Clinics, LLC, in the state of Alaska.

She has been a board certified pediatrician since 2001, and is certified in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).

In her off time she enjoys salmon fishing (as shown at right, enjoying a rare solitary evening at Jim Creek), reading, and snow skiing, and is a member of the National Ski Patrol. She is married with two children, ages 8 and 10.
