Randy
Twenhafel, P.N.P.
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
Randy Twenhafel retired from the military in October of 2010. He spent the last 6.5 years at Elmendorf AFB Medical Center Pediatrics, where he served admirably alongside both Drs Peterson and Hess. Randy was the most requested provider in the hospital and a favorite of the kids and parents, so it is no wonder that the doctors at Ptarmigan Pediatrics spent several months actively recruiting Nurse Twenhafel for this clinic!
He loves children, loves being a pediatric nurse practitioner, and claims “my vocation is my vacation" when it comes to clinic work. He lives in Anchorage with his wife of 16 years Donna, and 3 sons, who are very active in soccer. They train with and financially support the Street Soccer Academy, and tour "The Outside" playing at invitational soccer meets.
Randy was born in Detroit, lived in Muskegon and Saginaw, Michigan, as well as Victor, Iowa, Coffeyville, Kansas, and Kennewick, Washington. He enlisted in the Marine Corps ROTC program in 1978, and has been an officer since 1983, serving with the Infantry, Chemical Corps, and Armor. He is also Paratrooper qualified. He transitioned to the Air Force and became an AF nurse in 1994. He graduated as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in 2004 from the University of Washington. He has been stationed all over the world, serving in Korea, Germany, and across the United States.
He is a long and proud Detroit Lions fan (we clearly cannot question his loyalty), but he cheers for the Green Bay Packers when they are not playing Detroit. We have to be careful to keep him separated from chief New Orleans Saints fan Dr. Hess at certain times of the year.
Nurse Twenhafel has worked as a farm hand, ran an under ice trap line in Iowa, and sheared sheep for 9 years, including inside Hell’s Canyon. He's built miles of fence, scooped tons of manure, pulled calves, milked Holsteins, pigged sows (don't ask), and played football and threw the shot put. We are completely confident he will be able to handle whatever is asked of him in our clinic!
