OUR STAFF
Ptarmigan Pediatrics prides itself in being an
exceptional clinic where kids come first. Our staff is courteous,
friendly, and experienced in caring for children of all ages and with a
variety of medical conditions.
This clinic was started by two talented pediatricians, Dr. Laura Peterson and
Dr. Bruce Hess. Both are former US Air Force
doctors who have worked and trained together for years, are good friends, and
hold similar medical philosophies. They each lead a team of clinical staff
that stand ready to serve your medical needs. It is the goal of
this clinic to schedule you with your pediatrician when
you call for an appointment. The reality of the
situation is that there are times when your
pediatrician may not be available when your child needs to be seen. In
those cases, we will make every attempt to book you with a member of your
provider's team. Pediatric nurse practitioner Randall
"Randy" Twenhafel is an active and popular member of Dr Peterson's team. Retired Air Force Major Twenhafel worked with both docs at Elmendorf Medical
Center, and we are very excited that upon retirement he chose to join us in our

Elowyn Smith, D.O. and Family Nurse Practitioner
Lea Anne Abernathy joined our practice in August 2011
from Providence Matanuska Health Care. They work primarily on Dr Hess's team.
Regardless, if your child is sick, call our office as soon as possible and we
will do our absolute best to find one of our providers who can help you.
Our providers are supported on the medical side by a licensed practical nurse and
a number of certified medical assistants. The office
support staff consists of an office manager/head biller, assistant biller, three
schedulers, a receptionist and yours truly,
aka "rover." It is the goal of everyone working here to make your visit as
pleasant as possible and to provide you with the best quality service you and
your family deserve.
Ptarmigan Pediatrics is also dedicated to properly training future
medical professionals. Both doctors and their staff are mentors
with Wasilla's Charter College, providing externship opportunities where
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) students hone their skills in an actual clinic
setting. We also help provide clinical experience for nursing students from
University of Alaska, Anchorage and elsewhere.
